MaineCoastNow.com [1]reports: ROCKPORT (ME) — A pair of Waldo County women spent about twenty minutes at the dump on Union Street Friday afternoon, April 20, gathering signatures for a presidential impeachment effort before leaving after police asked them to not stop traffic.

“This is an effort to have the state Legislature introduce a resolution to call for the U.S. Congress to empanel an inquiry into impeaching George W. Bush and Dick Cheney,” said Cathy Mank of Waldo.

She and Phyllis Litchfield of Belfast were gathering signatures for the request by asking motorists entering the dual driveway of Mid-Coast Solid Waste Corp.’s transfer station to stop and sign signatures.

After doing so until about noon on Friday, Rockport and Camden police officers arrived on scene responding to a complaint of protestors at the dump trying to block traffic.

Rockport Police Officer Arthur Smith explained politely to Mank that she and Litchfield could be in a public way to gather signatures, but could not obstruct traffic. After explaining the law, Smith wished them luck in their endeavor and added “Just be safe while doing it.”

Mank said that this effort is underway nationwide in states such as Maine, Vermont, New Jersey, New Mexico and California. The goal of www.maineimpeach.org [2] is to get 10,000 signatures before the state Legislature by May.

“We know it’s late and we know it will be difficult,” Litchfield said. “But we want to show the American people it’s important to preserve the Constitution.” She added, “We can’t accept any more lies that are hurting people.”

A www.maineimpeach.org [3] flyer accuses President Bush and Vice-President Cheney of violating U.S. and international law by authorizing torture of captives and wiretaps of Americans and violating the United Nations Charter by invading Iraq.

Rockport Police Officer Arthur Smith, right, explains to Cathy Mank of Waldo that she cannot stop traffic in a public way such as the dump’s driveway. Behind them is Camden Police Officer Robert Laite.

Shortly after police asked them not to stop traffic, Mank and Litchfield left the dump.
