Great Barrington Voters Approve Impeachment Resolution by Wide Margin

Great Barrington (MA) voters overwhelmingly approved (by a vote of over 100 for to 3 against) an impeachment resolution at their town meeting after a thorough and wide-ranging discussion of Bush and Cheney's high crimes and misdemeanors. John Lippman, who spearheaded the initiative, remarked: "There was much exuberance during and after the vote and clearly those voters who approved the item felt that they were part of something bigger then just what happened in our little town this evening. It felt like most people had their intentions clear when they arrived and the level of support took me by surprise."

Boston Globe: Vermont Senators & Congressional Representative Reject Call for Impeachment

Jonathan Saltzman of the Boston Globe reports:

Declaring that the Bush administration's actions in foreign and domestic affairs raise "serious questions of constitutionality," Vermont state senators voted yesterday to call for the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney in what officials say was the first such vote by state lawmakers in the country.

Without debate, the Democratic-controlled Senate voted 16 to 9 in favor of the nonbinding resolution, which urges US Representative Peter Welch, a Democrat, to introduce a resolution in the House of Representatives to initiate impeachment proceedings.

Vermont's congressional delegation, which includes Welch and Senators Patrick Leahy and Bernie Sanders, promptly rejected the call.

They issued a statement saying that the three shared the anger of many Vermonters with the Bush administration, "one of the worst and most destructive in American history."

But, they said that, for the first time since Bush took office, Congress is investigating several of the administration's key actions, ranging from the decision to invade Iraq to the recent firings of eight US attorneys.

When Nancy Pelosi announced last fall that impeachment was "off the table," official Washington accepted that the primary avenue for holding lawless Presidents to account had been closed off by the new Speaker of the House. But the Republic's citizenry has not been so inclined. And now, with the Administration's troubles mounting, they're preparing to tell Pelosi that America and the world cannot wait until January 20, 2009, to put an end to Bush's reign of error. When Pelosi arrives at the California Democratic Convention in San Diego on April 28--the same day that activists nationwide will rally for presidential accountability--she'll find on the agenda a resolution that declares that the actions of President Bush and Vice President Cheney "warrant impeachment and trial, and removal from office." Delegates are expected to endorse the measure.
