Events undergo a kind of gestation process. What they appear to be the day they occur is almost never what they grow up over time to become.

After Torture, What's Next?

By James Abourezk

So, waterboarding is now OK. So is the suspension of one of our basic rights of freedom—the Writ of Habeas Corpus. Habeas Corpus, according to the U.S. Constitution, can only be suspended in cases of invasion or rebellion. Our Supreme Court has held, “habeas corpus is the fundamental instrument for safeguarding individual freedom against arbitrary and lawless state action.”

Bush Versus the Constitution

By David Swanson

Last December, when Congressman John Conyers released a huge report documenting the evidence that Bush and Cheney had lied us into a war, he also introduced a bill (H. Res. 635) to start a preliminary investigation of the matter and make recommendations on impeachment. This showed far more courage, not to mention long hours of work, than any other member of Congress had mustered at that time or since. But it was disingenuous. Impeachment is itself an investigation; a preliminary investigation is redundant. And any investigation is unnecessary when the impeachable offenses are part of the public record.

Conyers Releases Massive New Report on Bush-Cheney Crimes

The minority staff of the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee, under the leadership of Congressman John Conyers (D., Mich.) has produced over the past many months a staggering report, just released, which documents the hard evidence of crimes and abuses committed by President Bush and his administration (breaking 26 specific laws). This report, "The Constitution in Crisis," should provide the raw material for numerous news reports and point reporters toward fertile ground for additional investigations.
Please take a look:
http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/constitutionincrisis

Now, Take Action!

1. Ask the media to cover Conyers' report:
http://capwiz.com/pdamerica/issues/alert/?alertid=8955221&type=ME

2. Ask your Congress Member to sponsor H. Res. 635 to start an investigation.
http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/635

3. Buy this report as a book. Pre-order, and ask your friends to do so, and get it on the best-seller lists. Buy it here.
http://www.academychicago.com/GeorgeWBush.html

___________________

At Long Last...

Can you name the one country on earth where the government can steal elections, strip away basic rights, spy on citizens, and launch wars based on lies, but where the people do not take over the nation's capital in protest?

If you said the United States, you'll be wrong on September fifth when Camp Democracy begins on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
http://www.campdemocracy.org

At long last, Americans are preparing to say "Enough is enough," and to do what Ukrainians, Mexicans, or any other people not drugged into acquiescence would do when things got this bad: occupy the capital city to demand peace, justice, and accountability.

Share a Ride to Camp Democracy, Share a Room When You Get Here!

Camp Democracy will be held on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., from September 5 to 21. This will be a camp for peace, democracy, and the restoration of the rule of law. Camp Casey will move from Crawford, Texas, to Washington to create a larger camp focused not only on ending the war but also on righting injustices here at home and on holding accountable the Bush Administration and Congress.
The Case for Impeachment

By David Swanson

In the United States, our best journalism is published in books now and talked about on the radio and the internet. If you get your news from a television or a newspaper, you live in another world. This no doubt contributes to how divided we are politically. Dave Lindorff's and Barbara Olshansky's book could help bridge this national divide. The genius of this book is in its brevity. Lindorff and Olshansky have boiled the list of Bush and Cheney's documented crimes down to an amazingly concise summary, one that however gives a real flavor of the goings on in this criminal administration. I work on these issues and still learned a great deal by reading this book. If each of us who knows some of this and is able to process it easily buys ten copies to give to people who get their news from TV, this clear crisp book might just help save this country. Buy The Case for Impeachment.

Reasons for Impeachment -- SPANISH

Please send us improvements to this translation.

There is a country in the middle east that is an active supporter of terrorism, so much so it is estimated to have supplied known terrorist organizations, (ones known to have killed civilians multiple times), roughly $4 billion since 2000.

Brzezinski: Bombing Iran Would Be Impeachable

Why Impeachment?

Talking Points

Word, PDF.

While impeachment is a very serious step that should not have been trivialized the way it was during the last presidential administration, it is also an indispensable part of a system of checks and balances that sustains our democracy. When strong evidence exists of the most serious crimes, we must use impeachment or lose the ability of the legislative branch to compell the executive branch to obey the law.

Grounds for Impeachment from the Progressive

By Matthew Rothschild, The Progressive http://progressive.org

George W. Bush and his Administration have been so brazen in violating the law and asserting monarchical powers that we, as American citizens, must use the tool that the Constitution provides to reassert our rights, to reset the system of checks and balances, and to reestablish our democracy. That tool is impeachment.
