About ImpeachPAC

Q. Why was ImpeachPAC closed?

A. We launched ImpeachPAC in 2005 to help elect pro-impeachment candidates to Congress in 2006.

With broad netroots support, we raised nearly $100,000 and helped fund 20 outstanding pro-impeachment candidates.

Nearly all of these candidates ran without the support of the Democratic Party because Congressional leaders like Steny Hoyer (MD) and Rahm Emanuel (IL) believed the impeachment issue would mobilize the Republican "base" more than Democrats.

We are extremely proud of the candidates we supported, and they were extremely grateful for our support. And we are delighted that one candidate, Keith Ellison (MN-05), is now in Congress, serving on the House Judiciary Committee, and supporting H.Res. 333, Articles of Impeachment for Vice President Cheney, authored by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH).

Beyond the immediate benefit to pro-impeachment candidates, we believe ImpeachPAC helped encourage progressive Democrats like Rep. Kucinich to defy House leaders and lead the fight for impeachment.

Looking ahead to the 2008 election, it is unlikely impeachment will be a campaign issue, because Bush and Cheney are leaving office. Technically it is possible to impeach them after they leave office (as Senator Specter tried to do to President Clinton after the pardon of Marc Rich), but realistically the next President and Congress will have zero interest in doing so.

So instead of raising money for pro-impeachment candidates, we will probably raise money for "aggressive progressive" Democrats who are willing to challenge "Bush Democrats" who support the occupation of Iraq, warrantless wiretapping, and other criminal Bush policies.

Our initial thoughts on this new strategy are here:

And since we can now raise money for candidates more easily through ActBlue, we decided to close ImpeachPAC.

We thank everyone who supported us for our brief but exciting two years!
